Waste Management

Resource Recovery in form of material and energy and environmental sustainability go hand in hand. In fact, what is traditionally called Waste Management, is conceptually and actually shifting towards Resource sustainability go hand in hand. In fact, what is traditionally called Waste Management, is conceptually and actually shifting towards Resource Management. Efforts are made in Canada and around the world, to divert as much waste as possible from landfills and recover as much material as possible. This is truly the objective of waste management; maximizing resource recovery while minimizing environmental emissions.

Even though this transition is widely reflected in the legislation such as Waste Free Ontario Act, landfills are yet to cease to exist and there are still a large number of landfills that are already operating.

A sustainable waste management system needs to be strategically devised based on a “systems thinking” approach using techniques such as Life Cycle Assessment. Waste sector is one of the key Green House Gas (GHG) sources; according to Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Minimizing GHG emissions from landfills and other waste management practices is a crucial challenge put forward by international and Canadian authorities.

At SPCL we realize that there is a critical need for developing sustainable waste management systems to meet Canadian and international requirements. We are proud to have established a team of experts with decades of experience in waste management planning using innovative techniques such as Life Cycle Assessment, strategic planning, feasibility studies, conceptual design, detail design of waste management systems for both municipal solid waste and industrial/hazardous waste.
